Ten years in the Red Brick House: 10 reflections on care, community and movement

From Sal Oliver Lange, Director & Head of Physiotherapy

Barefoot Physiotherapy started out as a practical test to a question. Did the people of Brisbane want my version of Physiotherapy?

The only real way to answer this was to have a go. I knew the kind of Physiotherapy I wanted to provide, and the kind of place I wanted to work, and the environment I wanted for my clients (and later my team) to enjoy but you still have to know if that is also what others want.

Thirteen years ago, the vision felt clear: whole-body and whole-mind care delivered with precision, curiosity and genuinely high standards.

This wasn’t an approach I had been able to find yet in my career that was reproduceable across a team. I had found brilliant solo practitioners but building a team around an approach and taking care of them wasn’t something ‘usual’. Luckily we are the opposite of ‘usual’. The ‘usual way’ can means that what matter is missed, so we’ve always taken a different path.

Ten years into the Red Brick House, the vision hasn’t softened; it has sharpened.
The our high performance team is made up of truly holistic scientific physios: clinicians who listen closely, follow the clues, test everything, and refuse to stop at the first answer. That level of care takes time, skill and training, and we hold ourselves to it because it’s what creates real change.

Here are ten reflections shaped by 13 years of Barefoot style treating, leading, listening and learning.

1) Whole-person care isn’t optional; it’s the only thing that works.
Symptoms are information, not instructions. If we stop at the site of pain, we miss the body’s full story, its history, loads, compensations, nervous system patterns and the context you’re living in.
Treating the whole person isn’t an idea. It’s the baseline if you want long-term results.

2) Treating pain means understanding the mind as much as the body.
Your system doesn’t separate them, so neither do we. The Wellbeing Battery™ was born out of this reality: people recover faster and more consistently when their physical, emotional and cognitive load is acknowledged and supported.

3) Calm systems change better than overloaded systems.
Progress sticks when the nervous system feels safe. Unrushed rooms, clear plans, predictable care. They’re not aesthetic choices. They’re clinical ones.
When the system settles, movement patterns shift. When it doesn’t, nothing moves.

4) Test, don’t guess.
Testing gives clarity.
We don’t assume. We test, we treat, and we check what changed. If the body doesn’t respond in real time, it’s not the right direction.
This is where the scientist attitude comes in, no stone unturned, no assumptions carried forward.

5) Excellence is not an outcome. It’s a habit.
Training, mentoring, case reviews and system refinement happen weekly, not occasionally. Our standard is high because the alternative doesn’t get people better.
‘Good enough’ has never been good enough here.

6) Movement plans need to fit the person, not the textbook.
Your goals, your life loads, your sport, your season. A return-to-row program looks different from a desk-reset program, and they should.
Tailored care isn’t a luxury. It’s the only responsible approach.

8) People make better decisions when they understand their bodies.
Education is part of treatment. When clients understand the ‘why’, they move through the week with clarity instead of hesitation.
Confidence is an outcome of knowledge.

9) Consistency beats intensity. Every time.
Tune-ups prevent setbacks. Load builds gradually. Brisbane life shifts quickly, river loops, sport seasons, desk sprints, and bodies do better with steady support rather than crisis cycles.
Small steps, done regularly, create lasting change.

10) Community really matters
Physiotherapy is clinical, yes, but it’s relationship-driven. The conversations, the hallway laughs, and the trust built over the years are the things that help people feel safe enough to change.
The Red Brick House isn’t just a clinic. It’s a place where people feel seen, heard and supported, and that changes outcomes more than any single technique ever will.

A final note

Ten years in the Red Brick House has confirmed this: our environment matters. When we take care of our Barefoot Physios they can bring their whole hearts and minds to taking care of you our Barefooters. Here’s to the next ten years of doing exactly that!

FAQs

What makes Barefoot Physiotherapy different from other physios in Brisbane?
We treat the whole person, not just the painful area.
Our approach combines whole-body assessment, understanding the nervous system, and what we call a forensic lens: listening closely, following the clues, testing everything, and confirming change in real time.
It’s detailed, evidence-informed physiotherapy delivered in an unrushed, human-first environment.

What does whole-person physiotherapy actually mean?
It means we look beyond the site of pain.
We assess your movement patterns, nervous system state, history, loads, compensations, and the context in which you live.
Pain is rarely a standalone issue. Whole-person care identifies root causes and creates long-term change.

Do you treat athletes and desk workers?
Yes.
Whether you’re training for performance or working long hours at a desk, we tailor treatment to your actual life loads.
The principles are the same: test, treat, check what changed, and support the whole system, body and mind.

What kinds of conditions do you treat at your Brisbane clinic?
We support a wide range of musculoskeletal and nervous system-driven presentations, including:

  • back and neck pain
  • nerve irritation
  • sports injuries
  • running-related pain
  • desk-related stiffness and headaches
  • persistent or recurring issues

We follow the evidence and assess the whole body to find the real drivers.

Why do you talk about the nervous system so much?
Because it dictates how your body responds to load, pain and change.
Calm systems adapt better. Overloaded systems don’t.
Understanding the nervous system helps us get results that actually last.

Can you help if I’ve had ongoing or complex pain?
Yes.
Complex cases are a core part of our work.
We use whole-body testing, neurodynamics, movement assessment and the Wellbeing Battery™ to understand what’s driving your symptoms, medically, mechanically and system-wide. From there, we build a clear, step-by-step plan.

How long will it take to feel better?
It depends on the issue, your loads, and how your system responds.
We give you clarity early on by showing what changes in the room, so you know you’re on the right track. Progress is steady, not rushed.

Do you offer running and sports physiotherapy?
Absolutely.
We combine detailed testing with load management and clear return-to-sport milestones.
It’s precise, whole-body, and tailored to your season.

How often should I see a physio?
To start with your appointments ideally will be close together (a day to 3 days apart). As we are solving and improving your movements this is happening in the session with us. Once we have things figured out more and your body settled down we space the appointments out (to a week, then 10 days then matched to what your body needs).

Long-term consistency beats intensity.
Most people do best with a plan that includes regular tune-ups to prevent setbacks, not just crisis appointments when things flare.

How do I book an appointment?
You can book online anytime, or contact the clinic if you’re unsure where to start.
If you need a clear assessment and plan, a Full Body Assessment is the best entry point. Book online to see one of our friendly, expert physios.
