Pip is a 3 year old Curly Coated Retriever. While she may look like a Labrador Retriever crossed with a Poodle, a Curly Coat is a breed of dog. In fact, the Curly is one of the oldest retriever breeds, likely being the first breed used for serious retrieving work in England. They were originally developed in England, and being a long-time favourite of English gamekeepers, were popular on the large estates. British artwork from 300 years ago features this distinctive dog, and written accounts go back to 1803.
Curly Coated Retrievers come in 2 colours black or brown. Their coat is best when they are able to swim regularly (this tightens the curls). They need minimal grooming (trimming ears and tail) and definitely no brushing. Pip swims everyday when she is at the beach. She does get a fortnightly bath in Brisbane to make sure she is clinic-ready at all times as she takes her role as Chief of Pats at Barefoot very seriously.
